I have been wanting to pick my own blueberries for quite a while now and finally decided to just pick a place and DO IT.
Opting not to drive almost 2 hours to a farm recommended by a friend, I searched pickyourown.org for a closer farm that still had reasonable prices. (Be forewarned, this site belongs in the graphic/web design Hall of Shame. I'm sure one of those exists somewhere.)
I think we did pretty well.....
Open only from 7a-12p Wednesday and Saturday mornings, this blueberry patch is obviously not the owner's main source of income. But even at a paltry $2.50/lb, I'm sure they are still making quite a nice profit from their labor.
They provided buckets for picking, then transferred the berries to plastic sacks for weighing. Between my husband and I we managed to almost fill 2 small buckets.
The final verdict? Just under 7 pounds of remarkably delectable blueberries for a grand total of $16.75.
I haven't stopped eating them since we brought them home.
I have plans for Carrot Blueberry Muffins, but breakfast this morning was Pumpkin Blueberry Pancakes.
1 c. gluten free pancake mix (I use Bob's Red Mill)
1/2 c. coconut milk
1/2 c. canned pumpkin
2 eggs
1 tsp. cinnamon
1 tsp. vanilla
1/2 c. blueberries
I usually make these pancakes with wild organic frozen blueberries from Costco (3 lbs. for $8!), but nothing can compare to fresh berries.
My next venture? Picking peaches!
Where do you pick berries, peaches, apples, etc.?
I'm definitely going to check out that site when we get back from overseas! Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteAnd wow. Those blueberries look heavenly.
I wish I lived closer to Nashville, because I'm pretty sure I would just piggy back off of what you've already done :) You find the best things!
I didn't know you had a plan to make Carrot Blueberry Muffins! Well, it's no longer secret now, and I can't wait take a bite into it then a few more...
ReplyDeleteLori!! Loved this post :) Random I know...but today on Better Nashville was a whole feature on picking PEACHES at this place in Lebanon. You should check it out. I would go to www.betternashville.com to find their address. You can also pick berries and apples there as well. Fun stuff!
ReplyDeleteThanks Whitney! I actually just did a bit of research about an orchard in Lebanon with peaches--I'll bet it's the same place! Thanks for the heads up :-D
